The Origin of Our Easter Embers
The Easter Ember Twentse Whisky is a special, limited edition from Distillery Sculte. With a limited run of only 200 bottles and distilled as a 100% natural and artisanal barley distillate, this whisky is a tribute to an age-old tradition from Ootmarsum.
The name refers to the Easter bonfire that is lit every year by the Poaskearls, a group of young men who play an important role in the town's unique Easter customs. Their tradition forms the inspiration for this unique whisky, whose story is told in more detail here.
From Tradition to Whisky
During the Easter days, Ootmarsum truly comes alive. The 'Poaskearls' (Easter Lads) go out to gather wood for the Easter bonfire, make their rounds through the town, and lead the 'Vlöggeln' (a traditional procession) through the historic centre.
These centuries-old customs form an important part of the local identity and are still maintained with great dedication. The fire that is lit symbolises new life and connection, and this very idea was the inspiration for the name Easter Ember, a whisky that reflects this special tradition in taste and story.
This connection to Ootmarsum and its traditions also forms the basis of this special release. With the Easter Ember, Distillery Sculte pays tribute to the moment the Easter bonfire is lit and the town comes together. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Ootmarsum Easter Customs Foundation, as a contribution to preserving this unique tradition.
A story you can taste
The Twentse Whisky Easter Ember is a whisky with a distinct character. The nose reveals fresh notes of earl grey, followed by a subtle smokiness.
On the palate, vanilla, sandalwood, and tea-like spiciness blend into a warm and layered experience. The finish is soft and long, with a hint of licorice, Sultana raisin, and a touch of smoke.
This layering makes Easter Ember a whisky that slowly unfolds in the glass. The various aromas and flavors build up gradually, allowing each sip to reveal new nuances. The interplay of spiciness, soft sweetness, and subtle smoke creates a warm and characterful experience.
Thus, this whisky not only reflects the artisanal craftsmanship of the distillery but also the rich traditions of Ootmarsum from which it originated.
