A Region with a Story
In the heart of Twente, surrounded by rolling hills, old farmhouses, and rustic forests, lies the origin of something special. Not only does the wood from which Sculte makes its barrels grow here, but it is also the place where the idea arose that this wood could make all the difference. Twente oak: sturdy, full of character, and deeply rooted in the region. It forms, literally and figuratively, the foundation of Sculte Twente whisky.
The Wisdom of the Wood
What makes Twente oak so special? Unlike the widely used American or French oak, Twente oak grows slowly, on the rich sandy soils of a temperate climate. This slow, natural growth results in wood that is hard, compact, and full of character. With its fine annual rings, it has exceptional flavor potential and a perfect balance between tannins and aromas.
The result? A barrel that does more than just store whisky. It acts as a full-fledged flavor enhancer, adding subtle, layered aromas: soft vanilla notes, refined woody spices, a light earthy undertone, and that characteristic sultan raisin, inextricably linked to Twente oak.
From Tree to Barrel: 100% In-House
What's special about Sculte is that everything, from the selection of the trees to the final bottling of the whisky, is done entirely in-house. Trees are carefully selected from forests around the Twickel estate. These logs then go to an artisanal cooperage with over 150 years of experience, where they are transformed into barrels of the highest quality. No other brand ages its whisky in barrels made exclusively from Twente oak. And you can taste it.
The barrel system has been developed with great care. Each barrel is initially filled with "new make spirit" (the young unaged whisky), after which the barrel can be reused multiple times. The interplay between first and later fillings creates a depth and complexity rarely found in other distillates.
The Master's Hand: Gerard Velthuis
The idea of aging whisky in Twente oak began with Gerard Velthuis, founder of Distillery Sculte. What started with distilling fruit on the Sculte farm in Mander, grew thanks to his curiosity and craftsmanship into an ambitious plan: to create a whisky that is unique not only in taste but also in origin. He delved into Austrian distillation techniques, experimented with malts, yeast strains, and of course: the barrel.
After years of research, Gerard was certain. Twente oak was not just something, but the missing link between land and drink. The way the wood relates to the spirit, the slow release of aromas, the control over the maturation process: everything was right. And the result? A whisky that is not only unparalleled but also internationally recognized as a top-class product.
Capturing the taste of the region in a barrel
That is ultimately what Sculte is all about. Every bottle of whisky is imbued with the essence of Twente. Not only because of the wood, but also through the use of local spring water and the artisanal craftsmanship that precedes every step. The environment is not only a source of inspiration but an essential part of the product.
This connection with the region creates a taste that cannot be found anywhere else.
Awards that crown the essence
The fact that the use of Twente oak is not only symbolic but also of qualitative value is evident from international recognition. In prestigious competitions such as the World Spirits Competition in San Francisco and the International Spirits Challenge in London, Sculte repeatedly won medals. From silver to double gold: these awards are not just a token of appreciation, but proof that innovation and tradition can perfectly reinforce each other.
The Sculte Twente Whisky Special Limited Edition 2MB Recipe Four, for example, won silver in both San Francisco and London in 2025. This edition matured exclusively in Twente oak, proving that the barrel is more than a container: it is a flavor partner.
Not a coincidence, but a choice
At Sculte, nothing is accidental. Every detail, from malt to maturation time, is carefully considered. But if there is one choice that embodies the soul of the brand, it is the choice for Twente oak. Not because it is easy, not because it is cheap, but because it is right. Because it feels like coming home. Because, like Sculte itself, it is rooted in the region.
Whoever drinks a glass of Sculte whisky drinks not a global blend, but a local masterpiece. And you can taste it: layer by layer, sip by sip.
